Recovering From Imprisonment Masterclass with Andrew T. Austin and Shaun Attwood
22nd May 2010, 930am - 5pm
Regents College, London £95 per person (by prior booking only) - Online Booking
In this workshop we will be exploring the effects and influence of imprisonment upon the psyche and mental health of former prisoners. The aim of this exploration is to raise the issues that therapists and support workers may need to consider when working with this particular client group.
Shaun Attwood may be familiar to many through his blog and recent media appearances. A former prisoner who served nearly 6 years in the Arizona state prison system, surviving both the prisons gangs and the notorious regime instigated by Sheriff Arpaio, Shaun Attwood's blog became a popular read allowing many people an otherwise inaccessible insight into the US prison system. Released in 2007 and now back in the UK, Shaun has written a book about his experiences, gives talks in schools and has appeared on the BBC.
Areas covered between Andrew and Shaun:
Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Adaptation Processes
Bio-Psychological Effects of Prolonged Stress and Imprisonment
The Use of IEMT in Recovery
The major effects of long and short term imprisonment upon prisoners
Strategies for coping with the psychological effects of imprisonment
Interventions offered by prison psychologists
When coping breaks down - what really happens when people cannot cope in prison.
At times amusing, and at times deeply disturbing, Shaun's first hand prison experience will outline and explore the psychological impact of imprisonment and the effects upon both himself and other prisoners, and the assistance, good and bad, that he had along the way from the prison psychological services.
After being treated by a number of amateurs, Shaun fell into the hands of a brilliant prison psychotherapist whose advice he still uses to this day. He blogged on all of his sessions, an example of which is here:
